GRADUATE EDUCATION

The Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education is the chief academic and administrative officer of the faculty of the Graduate School and reports to the Provost. The faculty of the Graduate School include all faculty involved with non-professional programs leading to the Ph.D., the Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and any other degrees as may be authorized by the Board of Trustees. These Ph.D. and Masters programs involve faculty with primary appointments in the following schools: Arts and Sciences, Sanford School of Public Policy, Pratt School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, the Fuqua School of Business, Divinity School, and the Nicholas School of the Environment. The faculty members of these schools instruct and supervise students in these graduate programs under guidelines set by the Graduate School.

The Dean and Vice Provost is responsible for:

• Leading the overall administration of the Graduate School, including setting policies, budgets, and procedures for admission
• Launching strategic planning initiatives that ensure the excellence of graduate programs at Duke
• Approving all persons recommended for admission, by the Directors of Graduate Studies, to the Graduate School
• Setting budgets, in consultation with the deans of participating schools, for graduate awards in all programs of the Graduate School
• Appointing Directors of Graduate Studies for each of the departments and programs of the Graduate School
• Approving all general academic regulations of the Graduate School
• Guiding external and internal reviews for all departments and programs that offer degrees or certificates authorized by the Graduate School
• Serving as an ex officio member of the Provost's Appointments, Promotions, & Tenure Committee
