Interdisciplinary Studies
The Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies works with faculty members and administrators from Duke's nine schools to instigate and facilitate interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and instruction. The VPIS also provides ongoing oversight of Duke's signature university institutes and affiliated centers, and support to all interdisciplinary units on campus. The VPIS works closely with the Executive Vice Provost for Finance and Administration and the Office of Interdisciplinary Program Management.
The office is additionally responsible for:
- sponsoring the annual Common Fund competition for interdisciplinary research
- collaborating with deans and department chairs to overcome obstacles to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship
- helping to create structural changes in support of interdisciplinary activities, including new Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure guidelines and hiring procedures
- working with the university development office to create strategies for interdisciplinary program fundraising.
- establishing school compliance with institute and center oversight procedures
- providing information about interdisciplinary programs to the Duke community and external organizations.
