Adrienne Jones is a Ph.D. candidate in both Public Policy and Sociology. She has dedicated herself to addressing pressing social issues and advancing equity and inclusion through her research, teaching, and service and has distinguished herself as an exemplary individual dedicated to service, mentorship, and leadership.
Throughout her academic career, Adrienne has demonstrated a deep passion for mentoring and supporting students at all levels. From her role as an Assistant Residence Coordinator (ARC) in the undergraduate dorms to her leadership as a lead Teaching Assistant (TA) for public policy courses, Adrienne has provided guidance, encouragement, and support to countless individuals, nurturing their personal and professional growth. As noted by Max Whelan, Master of Theology student,
“Adrienne consistently demonstrates a passion for shepherding students and colleagues, nurturing their personal and professional hopes and aspirations while maintaining an eagerness to grow and learn alongside the communities she provides service to.”
In addition to her mentorship roles, Adrienne has been actively involved in various research initiatives and service programs, including her work as a Global Justice and Equity Fellow and her participation in the President's Council on Black Affairs. Her commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion has been instrumental in creating a more supportive and inclusive community for all. Fellow Ph.D. candidate in Public Policy and Sociology, Warren Lowell said,
“Adrienne’s expertise on intersectional equity and justice has touched hundreds of Duke students between her teaching at Sanford, in Bass Connections, and at DKU. I have personally heard my own students rave about her guest lectures in PUBPOL 155 on structural inequality, stating Adrienne’s was their favorite lecture of the semester. Her teaching has prepared a generation of Duke students to address some of the world’s most pressing issues.”
Adrienne's impact extends far beyond the confines of academia, as evidenced by her involvement in community outreach and engagement. Whether serving as an Assistant Residence Coordinator, a lead TA, or a mentor to fellow graduate students, Adrienne has consistently demonstrated kindness, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
In recognition of her exceptional leadership, dedication to service, and unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive communities, it is with great honor and gratitude that we present Adrienne Jones with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.
