Colleen Scott
2024 Staff Recipient
Colleen Scott has served in her role as the Director of the Baldwin Scholars Program since 2014. She has not only managed the daily operations with unparalleled expertise but has also served as a beacon of inspiration for countless female-identified undergraduate students. Her commitment to creating a nurturing and empowering environment has transformed the lives of those under her guidance, fostering a sense of belonging and resilience that extends far beyond the confines of Duke University.
Colleen's impact is reflected in the heartfelt letters of support written by 15 Baldwin Scholars and 6 esteemed colleagues, each a testament to the profound influence she has had on the lives of those around her. Dr. Jenette Wood Crowley eloquently captured Colleen's essence, stating,
“Colleen possesses a rare combination of empathy, compassion, and dedication that has a profound impact on the lives of her students. Her genuine concern for their well-being creates a safe space for them to share their struggles, seek guidance, and find the support they need to overcome challenges.”
Through her mentorship, Colleen instills in her students a sense of belonging and resilience, empowering them to navigate the complexities of university life with confidence. Colleen supports these scholars in many ways, put aptly by Sasha Rhee, Baldwin Scholar Class of 2027:
“As a first-year student here at Duke, there is no one who has been more kind, caring, and thoughtful than Colleen. She is constantly thinking about others and does little acts of service and kindness every day to make everyone around her feel loved. She is one of the main reasons why I applied to be a Baldwin Scholar: her warm energy was infectious during my interview, and it was very clear from the start that she is an extremely selfless person. She embodies the word 'empowerment' and has put in so much work to ensure that all of us young woman scholars are able to be our best selves.”
Colleen's dedication extends beyond her professional responsibilities, as she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being and success of each individual she encounters. Whether baking cookies for Baldwin meetings or providing a listening ear during times of difficulty, Colleen's kindness and generosity know no bounds.
Today, as we honor Colleen Scott with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, let us celebrate her remarkable achievements, her unwavering commitment to service, and her profound impact on the Duke University community. May her legacy continue to inspire us all to cultivate empathy, compassion, and dedication in our own lives.
