Together Duke, the university’s 2017 strategic plan, describes several goals for broadening and deepening doctoral education. The Provost’s Ad Hoc Committee on Reimagining Doctoral Education (RiDE) subsequently examined how to balance the need to sustain disciplinary excellence with our responsibility to offer Ph.D. training that prepares students to make a difference in a wide array of professional contexts. The committee’s work culminated in a 2018 report that outlines a set of recommendations.
Convened in April 2019, the RiDE Implementation Committee met throughout the following year to set priorities for action. Since then, the Provost’s Office has continued to work with The Graduate School, Duke’s other schools, and the university’s 54 Ph.D. programs to adopt new policies and launch new programs. Selected updates follow, grouped into the three main categories of the report’s recommendations.
