Comments sought for regular review of Chris Beyrer, director of the Duke Global Health Institute
A committee has been appointed to conduct a review of Chris Beyrer, director of the Duke Global Health Institute, announced Provost Alec D. Gallimore; Mary E. Klotman, executive vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine; and Ed Balleisen, senior vice provost for interdisciplinary programs and initiatives.

Duke conducts regular reviews of all deans, vice provosts, senior staff and faculty members who have major administrative positions reporting to the provost. Beyrer was appointed to his role in 2022 and is currently serving his first five-year term.
The committee is chaired by Lesley Curtis, professor and chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences. Other members are:
- Farr Curlin, professor of medicine and medical humanities;
- Jessilyn Dunn, associate professor of biomedical engineering;
- Beth Gifford, research professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy;
- David Ridley, professor of the practice in the Fuqua School of Business;
- Hedwig Lee, James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Sociology;
- Jennifer Wernegreen, associate professor of environmental and evolutionary genomics; and
- Lawrence Yang, Pauline Gratz Distinguished Professor in the School of Nursing.
An important part of the review process is gathering input from the university’s many constituencies. Observations regarding the director’s leadership and suggestions for the future of the Duke Global Health Institute are important to the committee’s work. The committee invites members of the Duke community to share their thoughts by using this online form or by sending an email to beyrer-review@duke.edu.
Communication should include the nature of interactions with Beyrer, his team and the areas under their purview so that the committee can understand the context of comments as fully as possible.
All information will be treated as confidential, to be shared with the members of the review committee only. An aggregate summary of submitted communications will be included in the committee's written report to the provost.
The deadline for submitting comments is May 15, 2026.
