Search Committee for New Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Programs Announced

Provost Alec D. Gallimore has appointed a committee to lead the search for Duke University’s next Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Programs. The position description is located on the website of the Office of the Provost.

Edward Balleisen, who has served in the role since 2015, will step down at the end of June to begin his new role as provost and executive vice president of academic affairs of the George Washington University.

The search committee will be chaired by Lisa Gennetian, Pritzker Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy. Other members of the committee are: 

  • Chris Beyrer, director, Duke Global Health Institute and Hock Distinguished Professor of Medicine, School of Medicine
  • Chris Freel, associate vice president for research & innovation
  • Leanne Gilbertson, associate professor, Pratt School of Engineering 
  • Mitchell T. Heflin, professor of medicine, School of Medicine
  • H. Timothy Lovelace, Jr. professor of law and John Hope Franklin Research Scholar, School of Law
  • Patrick Smith, associate research professor, Divinity School
  • Richard So, Michael G. Rhodes and Maureen C. Rhodes Associate Professor, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences
  • Toddi Steelman, vice president and vice provost for climate and sustainability

The provost has charged the committee with conducting an internal search to identify a highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates for the position. 

The search committee invites confidential nominations of candidates and comments about the position via email to provostofficesearch@duke.edu. Applications will be accepted from regular-rank faculty. Candidates should submit a cover letter, vision statement, and current CV no later than May 6, 2026. All submissions to the search committee will be kept confidential.
