News: Future Universities Alliance Names Inaugural Innovation Sandbox Cohort

The Future Universities Alliance has selected 49 institutions from 23 countries for the inaugural cohort of its Innovation Sandbox, a 12-month peer learning program for higher education leaders advancing ambitious, institution-level innovation.

The cohort brings together founders of new universities, administrators and faculty leading high-stakes changes within established institutions, and leaders of proven models exploring how their innovations can travel to new contexts. Participants were chosen through a competitive process that drew applicants from around the world in its inaugural year.

About the Alliance

The Future Universities Alliance supports higher education leaders building new institutions and renewing existing ones. Launched by Duke University in January 2026, it brings together emerging and established universities pursuing bold ideas and substantive change: reimagining liberal education, strengthening interdisciplinary learning, expanding access, and developing new institutional models. Around the world, these leaders are working to transform their institutions, too often in isolation.

That isolation carries a cost. Founders gravitate toward entrepreneurship and innovation circles, while academic leaders connect through higher education conferences and associations. Few spaces exist for higher education's builders and renewers to work together on shared challenges across borders and institution types, though they have much to offer one another. Without stronger channels for exchange, universities waste effort solving problems others have already addressed, and promising innovations stay confined to where they started.

The Alliance was created to close that gap, on the premise that difference itself is generative: universities working under different constraints ask different questions, notice different problems, and arrive at different solutions. It treats innovation and renewal as a process of adaptation over adoption. An idea that succeeds in one setting rarely transfers uniformly into another, so the task is to understand why an approach works, test it under varied conditions, adapt it to local realities, and keep improving it. The Alliance follows an open-source logic rather than a scale-and-replicate model: institutions contribute what they are learning, draw on the experience of others, and share back what they discover, so that knowledge accumulates among institutions rather than remaining confined to individual ones.

That work runs through the Innovation Sandbox, the annual Global Summit, capacity building for the teams leading change, and insights and analysis that carry lessons well beyond the participating institutions. The Alliance is incubated at Duke University, whose role is to convene and steward the effort rather than to promote a particular model.
